Cooking

The kitchen has everything you need for a delicious holiday. The essentials, of course: a dishwasher, fridge, hob and kettle. But also a microwave, toaster and Nespresso machine, plus all the utensils you need. A bottle of wine is always waiting for you, with tea and coffee for when you arrive. A high chair is available too.

Bathroom

There is a bathroom with a rain shower and a separate toilet. The upstairs bedroom also has a small washbasin with tap and mirror. From May to October you can shower outside, cold or warm, or rinse your feet after a day at the beach. Also handy: a washer-dryer for a quick load of laundry.

Garden

The garden offers plenty of privacy and lovely spots to enjoy the sun or the shade. Eat together at the large table with 8 chairs, or relax on the lounge sofa in the afternoon sun. There is a hammock, and around the outdoor fireplace you can sit sheltered until late. Outdoor games are provided, and of course a fishing net and a football. Mind the windows :-)

You can park your car on site. Bikes go in the shed, where you can also charge an e-bike battery. Handy!

Living

The living area has a bright dining corner for 6 with a lovely view of the garden. The sitting area is a cosy nook to unwind in. There is fast WiFi, Ziggo TV (with Netflix, HBO etc. for subscribers) and a Sonos system to play your favourite music. You can enjoy the fireplace from both the dining and the sitting area. Books and games are provided!

Location

The house is in the lively village of Hoorn, with a few practical shops and cosy, good restaurants (see the bottom of this page).

Next to the house stands the 13th-century church of Hoorn, the oldest building on the island. The bus stops in the Dorpsstraat near the church, so the house is easy to reach without a car or bike.

Within a few minutes' walk you are in the beautiful Koegelwieck dunes and the lovely Hoornse bos forest, full of walking paths and remarkable bunkers.

Surroundings

A 2 km walk or bike ride from Simmerhûs lies Terschelling's most beautiful North Sea beach, with the beach pavilion Kaap Hoorn run by our friend Joost. Open in summer and winter!

Cycle or walk through the polder for a few minutes and you reach the Wadden Sea, with breathtaking views. The cycle path along the dike is beautiful and takes you past De Streken, an impressive artwork you can see and experience in summer. Cycle on towards the De Boschplaat nature reserve, a wonderful place to wander.

For children, the playground at Restaurant Zonneweelde is a must, with a terrace right next to it. You can go horse riding at Terpstra. And behind the church there is a football pitch that regularly hosts a game of kaatsen, the traditional Frisian ball game.

Shopping

For presents, small groceries and anything else you can think of, walk to Ben van Alles. The Boltsjekoer bakery (which also serves lovely breakfasts) is close by too, and in Hoorn you can rent a bike at Terpstra. For a big shop, go to the Spar in Lies or the Jumbo (with off-licence) in Formerum. Across the road is the large Zeelen bike rental.

Lunch, dinner and drinks

Hoorn has some lovely restaurants. Right next to Simmerhûs is restaurant and hotel Aest, recently opened and a culinary highlight. On the other side of the Dorpsstraat you will find tapas restaurant De Reis, and a little further on Zonneweelde with its large terrace and playground. Do look in at Flang in de Pan for a special culinary experience. We are very happy that Groene Weide recently reopened, with good coffee, a cosy restaurant and live music at weekends. A few kilometres away in Oosterend is the Eilandbistro, with delicious French cooking, and if you cycle on to the sea you reach the original beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel. You can also walk there along the beach from Hoorn.

Our island favourites

We are big fans of the ZandZeeBar on the beach at Formerum. The village of Formerum also has bar de Vijfpoort, the Boekenboer bookshop and the Wrakkenmuseum shipwreck museum. De Koffiemolen is very relaxed with small children, and around the corner at De Rustende Jager you can have a simple but tasty bite on the terrace, or play games inside when it rains.

Midsland regularly holds a street market (buy De Sjouw for all island events and dates) and is a nice place to shop. De Koffiepot and Pura Vida are our regular haunts there.

West has several good clothes shops, a surf shop and a Hema. Get coffee, sandwiches and island treats from our friends at 'T Lokaal. De Walvis at the Groene Strand is a must, with an amazing view thrown in; a walk to the lookout point or along the beach is highly recommended. Interested in history? Museum 't Behouden Huys tells you all about our wonderful island!
